In 1947, Coach “Biggie” Munn brought the school colors of green and white back to Michigan State football.
Biggie Munn can be credited with giving Michigan State football the green helmets with white stripes, as well as the white pants with green stripes. Both contributions have been altered in some way in 63 years, but can be found on the present team’s uniforms.
Biggie Munn’s final record at Michigan State was 71 - 16 - 3 with a National Championship in 1952, a Big Ten Championship in 1953 and a Rose Bowl victory in 1954.
Biggie Munn brought his Spartans out in the 1947 opener against Michigan wearing white leather helmets with a green wing design.
Biggie Munn’s coaching debut resulted in a 55 - 0 loss to interstate arch rival University of Michigan. Being quite superstitious, Biggie Munn immediately retired the team's new white leather and green winged helmets.
Before the second game of the 1947 season (Kentucky), Biggie Munn presented to each player a new, Riddell plastic suspension helmet with a green shell and a white one-inch center stripe. Either superstition over the blowout loss at Michigan or just a morale booster, the new plastic helmets were a huge hit with players and fans.
Biggie Munn’s helmet design would don the rest of his career and continue through the 1955 season with the exception of two games in 1954 (Wisconsin and Indiana).
