The helmet featured the Michigan State Helmet Logo. Stripes were removed from the helmet and pants. Green pants were reintroduced for away games.

  • Metallic green helmet
  • No center stripe – major break with tradition that went back as far as 1934
  • Michigan State Helmet Logo
  • White facemask
  • Big Ten Conference logo over the nose bumper
  • Player numerals on back – white numerals on a single circular green decal, placed to the right side of the helmet
  • United States flag sticker on back, placed to the right side of the helmet
  • Block S Logo helmet stickers on back – white circular decal with green Block S Logo with players filling up the right side of the helmet before they add them to the left side


Jersey

  • Green jersey
  • White “MICHIGAN STATE” appears above the player numerals in the Saban-Era Michigan State Script
  • White solid color player numerals on front
  • Nike logo on left shoulder
  • V-neck color and sleeve trim are the same as jersey colors
  • White solid color TV numbers on top of shoulders
  • No player last names on the back above the player numerals
  • White solid color player numerals on back


Pants

  • White pants
  • Nike logo on the front of the upper right leg
  • Michigan State Helmet Logo on the front of the upper left leg
  • Solid white pants, no stripes

  • John L Smith was the fourth coach to use green pants – Biggie Munn introduced them in 1954, Frank “Muddy” Waters reintroduced them for his final season in 1982, George Perles has his team wear them during his final season in 1994, and John L Smith had the football team wear them during his entire tenure for most of the away games and even some of the home games


2003 Mid-Season Changes

For the Michigan State vs. Rutgers game on September 6, 2003 (44 – 28 Win), Michigan State removed the Michigan State Helmet Logo from their helmets and added a patch with the Michigan Agricultural College logo and the number “1000” to their jerseys – this was done in recognition of Michigan State’s 1,000 football game, the scoreboard also read “Aggies,” Michigan State’s original mascot.

For the Michigan State vs. Nebraska game on December 29, 2003 (17 – 3 Loss), Michigan State wore a MasterCard Alamo Bowl patch on the right shoulder.

2004 Mid-Season Changes

For the Michigan State vs. Notre Dame game on September 18, 2004 (31 – 24 Loss), Michigan State wore green jerseys with green pants and socks.

For the Michigan State vs. Michigan game on October 30, 2004 (45 – 37 3OT Loss), Michigan State wore white jerseys with white pants and socks.

2005 Season Changes

Jersey

  • TV numbers were moved to the side of shoulders
  • A 150 Year patch commemorating the anniversary of Michigan State’s foundation in 1855 was added to the center of the V-neck for the 2005 season


2005 Mid-Season Changes

For the Michigan State vs. Indiana game on October 29, 2005 (46 – 15 Win), Michigan State wore green jerseys with green pants.

2009 Mid-Season Changes

For the Michigan State vs. Notre Dame game on September 23, 2006 (40 – 37 Loss), Michigan State wore the Original Spartan Head Logo on both sides and white two-inch player numerals on the back of their helmets to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the “Game of the Century” between #1 ranked Notre Dame and #2 Michigan State, which ended in a 10-10 tie – Michigan State also wore a commemorative patch on their right shoulder.

For the Michigan State vs. Ohio State game on October 14, 2006 (38 – 7 Loss), Michigan State wore green jerseys with green pants and white socks.

For the Michigan State vs. Purdue game on November 4, 2006 (17 – 15 Loss), Michigan State wore green jerseys with green pants and black socks.

For the Michigan State vs. Penn State game on November 11, 2006 (17 – 13 Loss), Michigan State wore white jerseys with white pants and black socks.
