Beginning with the Michigan State vs. Notre Dame game on September 22, 2001 (17 – 10 Win), and for all the remaining games of the season, Michigan State added a United States flag patch to their jerseys along with a United States flag decal to their helmets, in memory of the events of September 11, 2001.
For the Michigan State vs. Fresno State game on December 31, 2001 (44 – 35 Win), Michigan State wore a Silicon Valley Football Classic patch on the left shoulder – to make room for the patch, the Nike logo was moved below the V-neck.
