The new Spartan helmet logo was found by a fan in January 2010 on the United States Patent and Trademark Office Web site before it was released as part of an overall rebranding of athletics in partnership with Nike. After a massive outcry by fans, Athletic Director Mark Hollis decided not to replace the contemporary Spartan helmet logo with the new Spartan helmet logo.
Modern State Script

In 2002, the modern “State” script logo also appeared on the front of the Michigan State football jerseys, replacing the words “Michigan State” for a single season.

The 2009 – 2010 season was the last season for the modern "State" script. It was replaced with the new Spartans wordmark.

The arch logo was worn when Michigan State won its second NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship in 2000.

Original State Script
Original “State” Script
The original “State” script made its debut above the player numerals on the front of the jersey when Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Greg Kelser led Michigan State to its first NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship in 1979. It is unknown if the original “State” script was used between the 1979 National Championship game and the 2003 – 2004 season. For three games of that season, Michigan State wore throwback 1979 jerseys which included the original “State” script. During the “Party like it's 1979!" themed 2008 Midnight Madness, the Michigan State basketball team wore green (away) throwback 1979 jerseys which included the original “State” script.
Gruff Sprty
Gruff Sparty
The Gruff Sparty logo has appeared on countless items of fan apparel for the last 50 years, but was only seen on the basketball jerseys for just two seasons.

Gruff Sparty appeared on the right leg of the away basketball shorts during the 1977 - 1978 and 1978 - 1979 seasons. This is overlooked as many pictures during this era are of Earvin "Magic" Johnson wearing the home jerseys for the National Championship game.
